Carlton Frank Evans

Carlton Frank Evans, a 42-year resident of Warwick, NY and Drakes Island, ME passed away peacefully on January 26, 2012 at Valley View Nursing Center in Goshen, NY. He was 86 years old.
Born on November 5, 1925 in Nashua, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Walter Francis and Grace Doris (McNayr) Evans.
He was married to Janice Barrett Evans on August 21, 1948, in Nashua, NH.
His early years were spent in Nashua, NH. He graduated high school at the New Hampton School in New Hampton, NH.
Mr. Evans served with the United States Navy as a Lt. (JG) during World War II as a navigator under Vice Admiral John Bulkeley on the USS Stribling. He attended Dartmouth College under the V12 program, earning his Bachelor's degree and Master’s degrees from the Tuck School of Business and Thayer School of Engineering in 1948. He enjoyed his Dartmouth years playing varsity football and membership in Beta Theta Pi. He was a dedicated alumnus serving the College in several capacities throughout his life including President of the Atlanta alumni club, many reunion committees and interviewing potential students. He said his Dartmouth and Naval experiences instilled a lifetime desire to serve his country, community, church and family.
Following graduation, he had a long and varied career with International Paper Company. He entered the sales training program and traveled for two years through all the paper mills around the United States. He then held sales positions in Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL. In 1965, he began to utilize his engineering training in research positions in Camden, AR and Sterling Forest, NY. He enjoyed the intellectual challenge of creating packaging solutions including train covers which involved “riding the rails” through the south. He was awarded several patents.
He served as chairman of The Town of Warwick Recreation Commission for five years during which period the Town Park on Union Corners Road was developed, the old Hamilton Avenue School was re-purposed as a Community Center, and new tennis courts were installed at the Middle School. He served on the Board of Directors of Bandwagon for 17 years and as treasurer for 9 years. He founded the Warwick Advisory Committee to the United Way of Orange County which was instrumental in gaining funding for Operation Wheels, Warwick Community Bandwagon, and the Day Care Center. He served on the Board and was treasurer of the Master Arts Series of Warwick, which brought prominent artists to Warwick for concerts provided free of charge to the community. His longest service was to the Meals on Wheels of Warwick from 1985 to 2005 serving on the Board as treasurer and chairman at different times. He enjoyed bringing cheer while delivering meals as much as the organizational responsibilities ensuring the long term stability of this vital organization.
He was a tennis enthusiast founding public tennis clubs in Camden, AR and Warwick, NY which promoted this healthy sport, organized tournaments, and renovated public courts. He played weekly until age 75 and for many years humbled his children and grandchildren on the courts.
He was a devoted member of the Warwick Reformed Church serving as a deacon, elder, and chairman of the finance committee. He was a fixture as a bass in the choir. His service was recognized by the Regional Synod of New York in 2002.
His summers were spent at Drakes Island, ME where the cold water never deterred his daily swims and he enjoyed the boisterous activity of his large extended family.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janice Evans of Warwick, NY; his children: Dr. Walter F. Evans II and his wife Candace of Dallas, TX, Craig C. Evans and his wife Lee of New Cannan, CT, Sara Evans Bennett of Fairfax, VA and Nancy Evans of Bedford Hills, NY; ten grandchildren: Cassie Evans Decker, Walter F. Evans III, James I. Evans, Natalie D. Evans, Daphne D. Evans, Peter D. Evans, Isabelle A. Bennett, Barrett W. Cox, John E. Cox III and Sara G. Cox. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Priscilla Evans and Muriel Shaw, and a brother, Robert L. Evans.
His spirited embrace of life with its challenges and many, many rewards influenced his family and all those who crossed his path. He was dedicated to doing good works quietly. His family will miss him but knows he will live on through their continued practice of his values and beliefs.
Funeral services will be held at the Warwick Reformed Church in Warwick, NY on Sunday January 29th at 2:00PM followed by a reception.
