Delores Mary Mashack

Delores “Mary” Mashack, of the Bronx, passed away on July 14, 2014 at home. She was 75 years old.
Born on August 1, 1938, she was the oldest of two children born to Earl Cole. In 1955, she married her first love, Willie Mashack. Out of that marriage, five children were born. Mary endured several losses early in life, one of which was the relationship with her biological mother, and the loss of one of her children months after his birth. Mary suffered the loss of her beloved husband in 1978. Mary always had problems with her sight and was declared legally blind later in life after suffering from three eye conditions. These things, among others, brought great challenges to Mary’s life, but ultimately strengthened her spirituality and faith in the Lord. Mary truly loved God. She raised her children to have the same love for the Lord.
Twenty seven years ago, Mary became a proud member of a twelve-step fellowship. There God used her to bring many people to a new way of life, including her children. She supported her sponsees through all types of human trials and tribulations, including some of their own homegoings to the Lord. She was a powerful example of God’s work in so many ways. She was valuable to a lot of people because she never turned her back on a situation.
Mary was a determined woman and when she set her mind to do something, nothing could interfere with her goals. At 55, she received her GED. She received several other certifications and honors. She proceeded to serve as a Vice President for the Jewish Guild for the Blind Advocacy Committee for several years. There she was responsible for improving services for her counter partners in the program.
Mary will truly be missed. She is survived by four children: Denise Smith, Sheila Mashack, Odetta “Jackie” Mashack, and her dear son, Willie Mashack; three grandchildren: Kenneth Thompson, Michelle Wayans and Candace Nia Garvin; two great-grands, Katelyn Thompson and Ryan Wayans, Jr.; her devoted son-in-law, James Smith and grandson-in-law, Ryan Wayans. Additionally, she leaves a host of extended family and friends who loved her and admired her tenacity.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am on Friday, July 18th, at St. Stephens RC Church, Warwick, followed by interment in St. Stephens Cemetery.
