Muriel J. “Betty" Baker, a former longtime resident of Yonkers, died Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at her home in Toms River, N.J. She was 92.
She was born on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1923, in Yonkers, to Dr. William and Rose Shanley. She graduated from Scarborough School in Scarborough, N.Y, and attended Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y.
She married John Baker in 1944 in Amsterdam, N.Y.
She worked as a medical secretary for many years in Yonkers, first for Dr. Valentine Nowicki and later for Dr. Frederick Vom Saal. She retired in 1987 as a medical transcriptionist at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers. Her family, the Shanleys and Freisingers, had deep roots in Orange County farm country for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Donovan, of New Fairfield, Conn; her grandchildren, John Baker and Debbie Guerra, both of Mahopac, N.Y, and Jennifer Morrison of Middletown, N.Y; and her great-grandchildren, John Baker, Emily Guerra and Colin and Kelly Morrison. She was predeceased by her husband; her son, John Baker, who died in 1991, her brother, William Shanley, who died in 1999, and her sister, Gloria Duncan, with whom she shared a home in Toms River, who died on March 2, 2015.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 22nd, from 9:30-10:30 am at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am at St. Stephen RC Church, followed by interment in St. Stephen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
