Thomas P. Ryan

2/22/2017

Thomas Patrick Ryan, of Hewitt, NJ, passed away in the early morning hours on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 after a brief illness.  He was 90 years old and as he recently pointed out – halfway to 91.

Born on September 17, 1926 in New York City, he was the second oldest of three children born to Thomas and Mary Ryan, both immigrants from Ireland.

He lived in the Bronx and Queens during his childhood and later settled in the Bronx when he married Barbara M. Hagan.  In 1972, he purchased a summer home in Hewitt, NJ, where he and his family spent many wonderful weekends and summers and where he eventually moved to full-time and lived until his death.

Tom served in the US Navy as a Petty Officer, Third Class during the Korean War.  When he returned from service, he began a long and illustrious career with the NYPD, from which he retired as a Deputy Chief.  Tom was also a member of the Emerald Society of the Police Department of New York City and a Member of the NYPD Holy Name Society for many years.

For a number of years after his retirement, Tom worked part-time for the Captain’s Endowment Association.  He was an active and beloved member of the Greenwood Lake, NY

American Legion Post #1443, a member of the Greenwood Lake Elks, BPOE Post 2067, and the Greenwood Lake Gaelic Cultural Society.  As well as the Orange County Shields and the  New York 10-13 Association.  He attended church regularly at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Hewitt, NJ.  Tom was very proud of his family, his country and the NY Giants, of which he was a loyal season ticket holder for over 50 years.  Most of all, he was very proud to be the son of a Limerick man.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara (nee Hagan); his devoted daughters:  Patricia Ryan (Dave Bianchi) and Barbara Wilhelmy and her husband Ron; his loving grandchildren:  Brittany Wilhelmy and Jake Wilhelmy; his brother, John and sister-in-law Margie; his sister-in-law Helen Quinn; many nieces, nephews and adoring friends.  He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Kathleen McGrath and her husband John.

Visitation will be on Friday, February 24, 2017, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick.  Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am on Saturday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hewitt, NJ, followed by interment in Warwick Cemetery, with military honors.
