Ernest William Hill, Sr., passed into eternal rest on March 17, 2017 at home with his family gathered by his side. He was 79 years old and was affectionately known as Ernie by family and friends. He made his home in beautiful Sullivan County, NY.
Ernest was born on April 8, 1937, in Barryville, New York, the son of the late William and the late Hilda Ellen (Eldridge) Hill. He had three sisters who all predeceased him: Alice (Hill) Ferber, Ruth (Hill) Colo/Hauck and Hazel (Hill) Covart.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Eline (Uthus) Hill and their three children: Valerie Gallo of South Fallsburg, her two sons Richard and Justin and Justin’s two daughters, Aubrey and Riley of Pine Bush, NY; Christine, her husband David Priest, their daughters Sandra and Chelsea of Middletown, NY, and their son Ernest William Hill, Jr., his wife Ingrid, their children Dylan and Casey, also of Middletown, NY. Ernest had two daughters from a previous marriage who also predeceased him: Patricia Ann Hill and Catherine Ann (Hill) Buck. Ernie also has numerous nieces and nephews.
Ernest spent his early years building parts for rockets and aircraft for American Standard in CT, then honed his skills as a master mechanic, but in his latter years, he changed professions and became a service technician for Suburban Propane until he retired.
His favorite pastimes included: being with family; gardening …..how he loved his tomatoes and peaches; his woodworking projects provided the family with many unique lawn ornaments and bird houses, but come April 1st, you wouldn’t find him, because he’d be in his secret fishing hole, or in the fall he’d be in the woods quietly waiting for a deer. Ernie also enjoyed membership in Mamakating’s (sportsmen’s) Conservation Club.
Ernest was the kindest husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held in the Warwick Cemetery arranged by his family and by Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Ave., Warwick, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc., 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
