Richard Hillmann

Richard (“Dick”) Hillmann, a 40 year Warwick resident, died on June 15, 2018 at the Schervier Pavilion. He was 77. He was born in the Bronx, NY on August 21, 1940. His parents were William D. Hillmann and Kathryn (Donovan) Hillmann.

Dick grew up in Mahopac, Putnam County, NY, where he developed an avid interest in plants at an early age.  After graduating from Trinity Pawling HS in Pawling, NY, he enrolled in the Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture in Doylestown, PA, where he majored in Ornamental Horticulture. He then enlisted in the US Army National Guard. After graduating from Officer Training School, he was assigned to the 133rd Maintenance Company, Peekskill, NY. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and served as Company Executive Officer.

He was the owner/operator of Lawn-A-Mat of Franklin lakes, NJ and Lawn-A-Mat of Orange & Rockland until his retirement in 2010.  He was also employed part-time by the George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ, where he supervised turf management and oversaw OSHA regulation compliance until 2017.

Dick leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Joyce. Their son, Richard B. Hillmann, resides in Milford, PA with his wife and daughter. He also leaves a sister, Joan Thomsen of Port Townsend, WA, and a brother, William D. Hillmann, Jr. of Fort Mitchell, KY.

Dick was a soft-spoke, gentle and generous person, who was always ready to lend his help to anyone, strangers included. He had a warm and welcoming smile and a quick, subtle humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and his three beloved terriers.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 17 Oakland Avenue, Warwick. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 20 from 3 to 6 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 21 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen RC Church, 75 Sanfordville Road, Warwick, followed by interment in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, 98 Galloway Road, Warwick. To send an online condolence, visit www.lsvpmemorialhome.com
