Donald J. McKenzie

5/13/2019

Donald J. McKenzie of Warwick, NY passed away on May 13, 2019 with loved ones by his side. As a lifelong educator, Don’s legacy as a teacher and public school administrator in Warwick, Nyack, Putnam Valley and Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES will live on through the thousands of lives he touched over the years.

Among his family, friends and past co-workers, he will be remembered for his kindness, devotion, caring, wisdom and quick wit.  Among those who knew him best … as a believer in the importance of family, equality, hard work, cursing at the refs, keeping the vineyards in business and people watching.  He was a lover of nature and an upholder of tradition. On a perfect summer day, he could be found oceanfront on the “upper deck,” gazing out at the breakers or deep in political discourse with one of his new “best friends.” As the air turned cooler, it was a crackling fire, with grandchildren underfoot and a ballgame, the news or the Weather Channel on the TV.

It was only fitting, therefore, for that to be exactly how Don spent his final days – right where he belonged – in the comfort of his warm home, surrounded by family and friends who will miss him dearly, and yet within whom his love will live on forever.

Don’s wife, Sue, son Jeff, daughter Jenny and their families invite those who knew Don to stop by to raise a glass, share a funny story and reminisce a bit during a celebration of life reception at the Warwick Valley Country Club on June 2 any time between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Donations in Don’s memory can be made to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc. online at www.HospiceOfOrange.com  or to the Warwick Valley Ecumenical Food Pantry, 135 Forester Avenue, Warwick, NY 10990 or online at www.WarwickPantry.com

Dear Sue, I was saddened to just read of Don's passing. I know that it has been a number of years since we spent some time together but my memories of a good friend, a respected colleague and an educational leader are still strong. Don and I had many conversations and more than a few laughs over the years and I am grateful always for these opportunities. Both Pat and I will keep Don and You, along with Jeff and Jenny in our thoughts and prayers. We are so sorry for your loss. Sincerely, John & Pat Monahan
