Michele Carter

12/3/2020

Our beautiful mother, Michele Carter, of Warwick, NY, ended her earthly journey on Thursday, December 3, 2020, at the age of 87, and is now joined with her loving husband, Charlie and her sons, Michael and Gary.

Michele was born September 27, 1933 to the late Jacob and Bertha (Weiss) Cohen, in Manhattan, NY, raised in Forest Hills, NY, and moved to Warwick at the age of 15. She was the Matriarch and heart of her family, her friend groups and the community she loved and devoted her life to, Warwick. Some of us might even call her the Queen! She taught us and those around her about love, acceptance and generosity of spirit.

She was a Warwick icon, giving to the community through service and volunteerism. Some of her favorite organizations were: the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Warwick, which she ran for 25 years, including organizing Thanksgiving and Christmas basket projects; Meals on Wheels; the Warwick Summer Migrant Program; and Jayncees. She led the local 4-H club for many years, helping youth to learn about the importance of service to others. She was a long time and very active member of the Warwick United Methodist Church. Michele gave generously to all around her. She was a former co-owner of the Pioneer Restaurant, 1976-86, again employing youth and helping them understand a strong work ethic. She was a great mother, friend and mentor to many, many people, including the 17 young men she and Charlie fostered over the years. “They raised a family of countless many.”  She will be sorely missed.

Michele is survived by her children: Robert and wife Sharon, of Royersford, PA, Beth and husband Steven Pivovar, of Stony Point, NY, Craig and wife Kelley, of Tacoma, WA, Julie of Middletown, NY, daughter-in-law Shermane Carter of Warwick, NY, German Colon and wife Diane, of Warwick, NY and Bob Moran and wife Debbie, of Warwick, NY. Grandchildren: Nathaniel (Casey), Cassandra (Charles), Rebecca, Taylyn, Sharleigh, Sarah Mayes(Khalil), Daniel Pivovar (Brittany), Cameron (Amber), Colin (Melanie), Justin Colon (Katie), Evan Colon (Heather), Paul Moran (Vanessa), Stephanie Riley (Jeffrey), Nicole Schaefer (Edward). Great-grandchildren: Gavin, Greyson, Alex, Phoenix, Shamel, Lilly, Naseem, Keyshawn, KJ, King, Finley, Charlie, Ella, Ava, Dylan, Logan, Scarlett, Kennedy, Teagan, Bram and more on the way. She is also survived by brothers-in-law Richard (Constance) Carter and Leo (Maura) Carter, and son-in-law Jon Bourassa (Jose).

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Robert Carter (2014), sons Michael Stephen Carter (1989) and Gary Alan Carter (2015), sister Shari Gail Cohen (2017) and sister-in-law Alice Whitney Carter (2009).

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 25, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Emmerich Tree Farm, 101 Sleepy Valley Road, Warwick, NY 10990.

The family requests that no flowers be sent and that donations be made to the Warwick Ecumenical Food Pantry, 135 Forester Avenue, Warwick NY 10990.

I cannot believe that it has been a year. I still miss her so very much, but I know she is reunited with Charlie, Michael and Gary and is at peace.

Michele Carter was the real deal; she walked the walk. In the early 60s when she and Charlie lived next to Bairds Tavern kids from Warwick were coming and going all the time. And they were always welcome, and made to feel at home. Michele's sister Shari was my good friend, and Charlie taught me 7'th grade science. We watched their kids grow up. I last saw Michele and Charlie at our 50'th HS reunion (2012). I'm so glad I got to tell them how much I appreciated their dedication to the children (and people) of Warwick, NY. Rest in Peace Michele.

On behalf of myself, my mother (Madeline Welch), and my entire family I offer my condolences to all of Mrs. Carter's family, friends, and loved ones. My family enjoyed the pleasure of being neighbors with Mr. and Mrs. Carter for some 35 years. Mrs. Carter was a kind, compassionate and caring person. She did so much to help out my family during its time of financial stress and was always there for us when we needed a hand. Mrs. Carter will always live in our memories and hearts as a wonderful servant of the Lord who truly put others needs' over her own. Her impact on the community goes without saying-- she was a matriarch to our little town showing endless compassion to those in need or those who just needed someone to listen. Her door was open to all and her smile could just warm your soul in a second. You couldn't help but smile back. I will continue to keep her in my prayers along with all her family and friends. I know in my heart that Mrs. Carter now rests with the Lord Jesus Christ she loved so much in eternal peace, as well as, with Mr. Carter in Heaven. May Christ's peace also offer you comfort in this time of loss. God bless you all.
