Michael Dane Benvengo, a resident of Warwick, NY since 1982, passed away on December 21, 2021 at Schervier Pavilion. He was 68 years old.

Michael was born on October 26, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Rose T. and Michael J. Benvengo.

At an early age, Michael became a classical trumpet musician attending the High School of Performing Arts in New York City, where he was a member of the All City Orchestra. During Michael’s summer breaks from high school, he played in the University of Vermont Orchestra in Burlington, Vermont in 1968 and 1969, the Interlochen Center for the Arts Orchestra in Interlochen, Michigan in 1970 and toured with a classical orchestra to various cities in Italy in 1971 with the American Festival Orchestra.

Michael attended Brooklyn College earning a Master of Arts degree in Musicology. Besides being a classical musician and opera fan, Michael worked for E. J. Korvetts in Brooklyn and was a reporter in the 1980’s for the Warwick Valley Dispatch.

Michael’s promising career as a musician was cut short when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1986.

Michael’s loving parents cared for him for many years until his condition required him to be admitted to Schervier Pavilion in February 1998. Michael’s family extends their gratitude to the entire staff at Schervier Pavilion for their loving care for those many years.

Michael is survived by his brother, James Benvengo and his wife, Karen of Warwick, NY; two nieces, Christine Bertollo and her husband Nicholas of Castle Rock, CO and Stephanie Benvengo-O’Keefe and her husband Matthew of Oceanside, NY; and two great-nephews, Ryan and Devin Bertollo.

I was so sorry to hear of Michael’s passing. Since his room was near my mother’s room at Schervier, I saw him almost daily. He always had a smile and something to say. He made me much more aware of different types of classical music and I found myself looking for obscure musical facts for Michael. I still think of him when I learn something new in classical music. Michael made the eight years of visiting my mother lighter. May you hold onto the grace his presence brought to so many people.
