Flora Whan, of Warwick, NY and Bloomfield Hills, MI, passed away on December 12, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Warwick, NY. She was 91 years young.
Born on May 21, 1920 in Toronto, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Robert McLelland and Flora Ziern.
She was married to the late Thomas James Whan.
Flora received multiple appointments as Jury Commissioner for Oakland County, Pontiac, Michigan. A patriot, she loved her country and was very active in politics. She was a leader in the Royal Oak, Michigan, Republican Women’s Club and was the president of Taxpayers United. She had the honor of traveling the state of Michigan with Milton Friedman, the recipient of the 1976 Nobel Prize for economics, to support the fight for tax limitation in the state of Michigan.
She is survived by her children: Thomas James Whan of Denver, CO, Douglas Bruce Whan of Guffey, CO, Nancy Lynn Slicker of Warwick, NY, and William Robert Whan of Birmingham, MI; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Robert McLelland, of Durham, NC. She was predeceased by a daughter, Flora Joan Hennessy and a brother, Archibald McLelland.
