John W. Houston

John W. Houston, of Bellvale, died on October 20, 2011 at home.  He was 90.  The son of Edgar A. and Clara Houston, John was born on November 7, 1920 in Bellvale, NY.

 

John graduated from Warwick High School in 1938 and form St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY in 1949.

 

He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II for which he received an Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.  One of Warwick’s most remembered days of the War was in the summer of 1944 when John piloted a B-24 at an altitude of 800 feet over Bellvale, Warwick and New Milford.

 

John married Helen DeGraw of Bellvale on March 10, 1946 in Bellvale and returned to military service, retiring from the U.S. Air Force, in 1966.

 

He worked as a statistician at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1967 through 1982.

 

John was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars-Post 4662, Warwick Lions and Warwick United Methodist Church.  He was known to be an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

 

In addition to his wife of 65 years, John is survived by his son Tony Houston and wife Sharon of Bellvale; grandchildren Matthew Houston and wife Mary Ann of Edenville, Aaron Houston and wife Lisa of Piscataway, NJ, and Jennifer Houston and David Gattuso of Warwick; great-grandchildren Brittany, Garett, and Natalie; several nieces and nephews.

 

John was predeceased by his daughter Pamela and her husband Richard Williamson; daughter Carol Houston; brothers Oliver, James, and Robert Houston; sisters Margaret Meng and Catherine Biafora.

 

A memorial service will be held at the Warwick United Methodist Church on Forester Avenue at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 29.

 

The Houston family sends special thanks to those who were John’s caregivers over the past year.
